When Schillaci and Sheedy meant more to some than Silas Marner or Shakespeare

Former students from the St. Eunan’s College class of 1990 are planning a special reunion event to mark 35 years since leaving the famous corridors of the college

A group of organisers have spent a lot of time tracking down all of those that completed their Leaving Certificate in 1990. However, there are still some people that they have not got in touch with.

This was the Summer of Italia ’90 and many from that class will remember sitting down in the Study Hall, the GPA or the old ‘Rec’ in St. Eunan’s to take their Leaving Cert. exams, thinking more about Schillaci and Sheedy than Silas Marner or Shakespeare. Were you in that class of 1990?

If so, and are interested, they want to hear from you!

It promises to be a great occasion, recalling many great stories and memories and the oganisers would love to have as many as possible get together for this occasion.

From relocating a teacher’s mini, to finding a first year that was brave enough to take his place at the top of the pyramid, there are some brilliant memories that won’t be forgotten.

Most of the 1990 class began their time at St. Eunan’s in 1985, but the class also had quite a few that started there in 1984. Some repeated their Leaving Certificate in 1990, others opted to complete a Transition Year and some might have joined the party for some other reason at some other time. Either way, you’re all invited!

There was an impromptu gathering of some of the class in 2016 to mark 25 years – even though it was a year late!

About 25 from that group made their way to the Brewery in September 2016, and it was such a good night that they all agreed that it needs to happen again. Paddy McTeague and Gerard Mullen were the main organisers of that event and did well to get so many to attend at short notice.

For obvious reasons, the 30th anniversary was never an option (the year was 2020) so it was felt that the 35th anniversary would be an ideal opportunity.

It all started at Christmas time when the main organisers got together at short notice and got the wheels in motion. They have managed to track down around half of those that need to be invited so are exploring every avenue to get in touch with those that don’t yet know about it. Anyone interested are welcome to get in touch with Eugene Kavanagh (087-9229446) or Kevin Neely (086-8551559). The event will take place on Saturday, September 20 and has been put together with the valuable help that was offered by former teachers Eddie Harvey and Fr. Michael Carney.

It all kicks off at 1pm and will include Mass in the college chapel, a tour of the college and some light refreshments. There will be lots of opportunities to recall and reminisce about their years there.

Later in the evening, the group will meet in the Brewery Bar for food and drinks and all are welcome. This promises to be a wonderful occasion and the organisers are grateful for the help that they have received to date from their former teachers, and to Damien McCroary, St. Eunan’s College Principal, for his permission to host the event.
