What about our six forgotten counties? – Councillor

AN organisation representing councils across the 26 counties has been slammed for cutting Northern Ireland out of its map.
Bundoran Councillor Michael McMahon branded the publication by the Local Authority Members Association (LAMA) an “insult to the people of the six counties”.
He was speaking at a recent meeting of Donegal County Council when Fianna Fáil’s Liam Blaney handed out LAMA’s year book and diary.
Councillor Blaney is Donegal’s representative on the national body which supports and looks after the interests of elected members.
LAMA, which is funded by the public purse, has over 800 members nationally.
But Michael McMahon said he took issue with a map on the outer cover of the organisation’s year book which portrays Ireland as being 26 counties rather than 32.
“There is a lot of information in this book but when you see the 26 counties and then the six counties blocked out, I think there is something seriously wrong there,” he said.
“I think it is a total insult to the people of the six counties and to the people here in the 26 counties.
“To find that this authority comes here having blanked out the six counties, I feel it is totally unacceptable and I for one totally reject it.
“I also think a strong letter should be sent to the president of LAMA telling him that we are working for Irish unity and there should be one Ireland for all the people,” Councillor McMahon added.
Councillor Liam Blaney made the point that LAMA was a representative body for the 26 counties but said he was happy to take the concerns raised back to the committee’s next meeting.
