West Donegal school to host community meeting on its future

A small school in west Donegal is to host a community meeting tomorrow night.

Scoil an Aingil Choimhéadaí in Keadue is seeking the community’s help to shape the future of the Irish-medium school.

Keadue National School, which is situated between the fishing villages of Burtonport and Kincasslagh, was initially established as an Irish language school in 1903.

However, over fifty years ago, they transitioned to teaching in English.

In recent years, the school has successfully transitioned back to teaching exclusively through Irish.

Traditionally, their catchment area was in the immediate area surrounding the school.

Since the move to Irish-medium, however, the school’s reach now extends to areas not served by any other Irish-medium national school, including Dungloe, Kincasslagh, Maghery and beyond.

As the only Gaeltacht school in the area offering primary education through Irish, they are now looking to involve the broader community in planning for the school’s future.

The meeting will take place in Keadue National School on Thursday, February 26 at 8pm and the school has encouraged the whole community to attend, whether you have children in the school, attended in the past, sent your kids elsewhere or have no link at all.
