RENOWNED musicians Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, the Friel Sisters and seán-nós dancer Caitín Nic Gabhann joined the Yes Equality Donegal group to fly the flag for their campaign on top of Errigal this weekend.
The 1916 Proclamation was invoked on top of Errigal Mountain by up to 40 members of Yes Equality Donegal on Easter Monday in support of the Marriage Equality Referendum on 22 May. The climbers were joined by Mairéad Ní Mhaoinigh of Altan.
Referring to the fact that the proclamation guarantees religious and civil liberty, equal rights and equal opportunities to all its citizens, and declares its resolve to pursue the happiness and prosperity of the whole nation and all of its parts, cherishing all of the children of the nation equally and oblivious of differences, Noel Sharkey, spokesperson for Yes Equality Donegal said: “These words were first read 99 years ago on Easter Monday in front of the GPO. Let us ensure that on the 100th anniversary of The Rising that this rings true for the LGBT community by voting yes in the referendum”.
Calling on the people of Donegal and Ireland to support the referendum to allow same sex civil marriage, Sharkey continued, “Donegal has a reputation for voting no in previous referendums. This time we are calling on the people of Donegal to say Aye for equality and to show just how welcoming, open and tolerant we are. To show that we cherish all our children equally. To show that our diversity is our strength.”
Yes Equality Donegal have been hosting information events, fundraising activities, canvassing as will as an impressive social media presence. They have over 3,400 followers on Facebook proving it the most popular and active regional branch of Yes Equality in Ireland.
A yes vote on 22 May will facilitate civil marriages to take place for same sex couples.
