Ways to manage volumes of people over Rally weekend

LETTERKENNY Chamber of Commerce is currently exploring ways to manage the volume of people expected to flock to the town over the rally weekend.
This week chamber members were asked for feedback on a number of suggestions aimed at  managing the crowds during the hugely popular event.
One of the suggestions is a longer road closure around the Main Street area. The Main Street area is usually closed to through traffic from early evening and it has been suggested that a longer closure would restrict traffic noise and activity in the street.
Another suggestion is that traffic management be put in place that breaks up /restricts the current “loop” of the town. The idea for an organised event or concert has also been put forward in order to ensure that people are on foot and park in a designated area.
Toni Forrester, CEO of Letterkenny Chamber of Commerce said: “The Rally weekend is a huge weekend for many businesses, filling hotels, and bringing in revenue for many. This discussion is really to look at ways to manage the volumes of people who flock to Letterkenny over that weekend and to make it workable for citizens and visitors alike.”
A number of suggestions were put forward last year during two meetings facilitated by the Joint Policing Committee regarding motoring events in Letterkenny.
The purpose of the meeting was to find ways to co-ordinate and better organise the “diffing” and other events that take place separate to the rally and to put in place a structure to deal with future events.
Ms Forrester appealed to chamber members to have their say and provide feedback on the suggestions made.
