Waterboys cancel gig on “health and safety” grounds

A gig by the legendary Waterboys was cancelled last night with the band citing “health and safety” issues.

The band was scheduled to play Gaoth Dobhair as part of the Fomhair Festival however their performance was pulled at the last minute. Support act Clann Mhic Ruairí did play but much to the disappointment of those in attendance, Mike Scott’s band did not.

The Waterboys front man said, “Tonight’s show at Fomhair Festival in Gweedore has had to be cancelled for health and safety reasons and power supply problems. It was not safe. We apologise to all who came to the show and are disappointed.”

The decision prompted an outpouring of both anger and understanding on social media.

Writing on Twitter Kevin Magee described the decision as “appalling”.

“No one from the band addressed the crowd to explain anything. A lot of disappointed people who’d travelled long distances to see them.”

While Twitter user Jan wrote, “I am sure this decision was taken concern and consideration of what would pertain if the gig went ahead.”
