Water outage expected to be repaired this afternoon

IRISH WATER has said the water outage affecting residents and businesses in Falcarragh and Gortahork is expected to be repaired by early this afternoon.

In a Statement the utility company said: “Irish Water regrets that due to a burst on the rising main from the treatment plant at Ardsbeg to the treated water storage reservoir, customers in the Falcarragh – Gortahork area are without water this morning. The burst is currently being repaired and water supply is expected to be restored early this afternoon.

Irish Water is continuously reviewing water network performance including burst frequency and duration and designing actions to manage the worst performing water mains  for replacement. In collaboration with Donegal County Council, Irish Water has identified critical mains with repeated burst history in the Falcarragh, Gortahork area. The existing pipework is asbestos concrete which was a common pipe material in the 1980’s. These tend to burst quite frequently as they reach the end of their lifecycle. Irish Water is assessing the next phase of mains replacement works under its National Leakage Reduction Programme. Irish Water will continue to manage the network in an effort to prevent bursts and respond to outages should they occur. All repairs are carried out as quickly as possible working in partnership with crews in the Local Authority.
