The first half was poor fare, with both sides striking ten wides apiece. Donegal could only muster three points and Longford led by the minimum at half-time.

Donegal levelled up matters after the restart before James McGivney was sent off for Longford after picking up a second yellow card in the 49th minute.

Rory Gallagher’s team gradually started to pull clear as the half progressed, thanks to points from Patrick McBrearty (2), Jamie Brennan, and Eoin McHugh.

Robbie Smyth made it a three-point game in the closing stages, but McBrearty and Murphy scored frees to secure Donegal’s passage to Round 3A of the qualifiers.
