THE group behind the restoration and rejuvenation of Letterkenny’s historic Church Lane is seeking volunteers for a ‘Scrape and Paint’  facelift of the area, starting this morning.

After the great success of putting out the flower boxes, The Cathedral Quarter committee took the bold and natural step of seeking to paint the window sills of the houses on the right hand side of the street.

A spokesperson for the committee said all the property owners have kindly agreed for these improvement works to proceed.

“We have been further boosted by the brilliant news that Rose Foley, widow of Tim’s, has agreed to supply the paint for the exterior of their building, formerly Church Street Cycles. The Secretary recently met Rose and her daughter, Maura Mills, both of whom attended our first public meeting way back in January. I outlined our group vision of how the street could be restored to its former glory and they pledged to help us in whatever way they can and for that, we are tremendously grateful.”

Starting this morning at 11 am, the plan is to start scraping the paint of the window sills of the lower half of the houses before starting the process of painting.

“We plan to work at this job for the coming week, up until 4pm each day, and we are calling on volunteers to join us. Even if you can pledge half of hour of your time, it would be so helpful,” the spokesperson said.

Volunteers are asked to wear old clothes and bring a paint scraper, a paint brush and possibly a set of steps.

If any businesses or any individual would like to sponsor the paint for the other houses, you can contact the secretary on 086 345 2457 or the treasurer Mary Hegarty on 086 261 7938, or any committee member .
