by Louise Doyle

MOTORISTS in Donegal are urged to exercise continued caution as a yellow alert for ice and low temperature remains in place until tomorrow, Friday, January 19.

A status yellow alert for snow and ice in Donegal came into effect yesterday and will continue until 11am tomorrow, Met Éireann has said.

All Donegal Winter Maintenance designated gritting routes have been gritted from 5am this morning. Roads were also gritted yesterday as overnight snowfall on Tuesday night and freezing temperatures swept across Donegal.

A spokesperson for Met Éireann said snow showers will lead to some accumulations, and have warned of the potential for further difficult travelling conditions and some travel and service disruption.

There were a number of collisions reported across the county yesterday. Gardaí are urging motorists to continue to drive with care amid continued precarious weather driving conditions.

A large number of schools were forced to close on Wednesday, and a number of transport companies did not operate morning buses due to the weather.
