MICHAEL ‘Owen’ McLaughlin is targeting a shot at the Irish welterweight title this year.

The 30-year old Carndonagh man is 9-1-1 from his 11 fights and will be back in the ring on February 21 in Quincy, Massachusetts.

Last year, McLaughlin had hoped to fight for a New England welterweight title as well as an Irish belt, but neither materialised. However, the Donegal southpaw has big days in sight.

McLaughlin feels at home in Boston and has fought nine of his 11 bouts in America. He had debuted at the Aura Leisure Centre in Letterkenny in October 2010 – on the night Paul McCloskey successfully defended his European light-welterweight title against Barry Morrison – when a contest with Valentin Stoychev was ruled a draw.

McLaughlin defeated Paulo Souza in Boston in October, on the night Jason Quigley overcame Greg McCoy. It was McLaughlin’s second win over Souza in 2014, stopping him in round two after doing likewise at the Royale Nightclub last March.
