MICHAEL Murphy joined a list of great Ulster GAA captains on Sunday when he led Donegal to a third Anglo-Celt in four years.
The 25-year-old Glenswilly man lauded his team-mates, manager Jim
McGuinness and Donegal’s thousands of supporters as he took receipt of the Cup from Martin McAvinney, the Ulster Council President.
Murphy has now captained Donegal to three Ulster senior, an Ulster Under-21, Division 2 League as well as Sam Maguire in 2012.
The proud Donegal skipper, looking down at a sea of green and gold that flooded St Tiernach’s Park, said: “The commitment, effort, sacrifice they out in this year has been second to none. They have been a privilege to train alongside and more or less life alongside for the last nine months.”
McGuinness had no qualms when he appointed Murphy as his captain following his appointment.
Murphy said of the Glenties man: “I don’t know what more I can say. After a massively tough year last year, Jim has juggled everything – work commitments, everything – but he has always put us as number one. A massive thanks for putting medals in the back pockets of us players.”
