DONEGAL County Chairman, Sean Dunnion, has expressed his anger and frustration at the way the ‘sledging row’ that marred last May’s Ulster MFC clash between Donegal and Tyrone has been reported in national and provincial publications.
On Wednesday last, the Ulster GAA confirmed that recent media reports regarding the investigation into the game back in May did not accurately reflect the findings of the Committee. At the time, it was alleged that Donegal captain Micheal Carroll, who lost his father to cancer last year, was taunted about the death by an opposition player.
The findings of the report into the ‘sledging row’ are to remain confidential but that did not prevent Teamtalkmag.com, viewed as the unofficial voice of GAA in Tyrone, claiming that they had been told by Ulster GAA that the episode “did not take place”.
Speaking to the Donegal News yesterday County Chairman, Sean Dunnion said that while it was now time to move on from the Minor incident, he had to put the record straight on behalf of the player, his family and the GAA community in Donegal.
“While both County Committees and the Investigation Committee accepted that the abuse was not about the death of the Donegal player’s father, the verbal comments made were still very personal to the Donegal player referencing his late father on a number of occasions during the match.
“As almost six months have gone by since the game it was the wish of everyone involved with Donegal GAA and the family of the player that the matter is closed completely at this point so that the player can now finally be allowed to concentrate on his Leaving Certificate studies and his future Gaelic Football career,” Mr Dunnion said.
