A US MILITARY device found in a Letterkenny garden last weekend has been identified as a historic, yet viable live grenade.
The Defence Forces Emergency Ordnance Disposal Team (or Army Bomb Disposal Team) were at Glencar Park in Letterkenny at 4.30pm on Saturday. The team isolated the device and removed it to an undisclosed safe military location where it was confirmed as a historic, yet viable live grenade. The scene was declared safe at 4.45pm.
The grenade was a US Mark 2 grenade which was in use from World War 1 right up to the Vietnam era, but a spokesperson for the Irish Defences Forces said it would be ‘unfair’ to speculate as to how the device got to Letterkenny.
