Urgent call for safety measures at accident blackspot

By Dionne Meehan

A LOCAL councillor will once again press for enhanced safety measures at an accident blackspot in Gaoth Dobhair during tomorrow’s meeting of the Glenties Municipal District.

It comes after a second motorist was involved in a collision at Knockastrollar, An Bun Beag last week, just days after another was hospitalised after her car left the road.

Speaking to the Donegal News, Cllr Micheál Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig said he has been highlighting the issue for some time.

“Unfortunately, there was another accident on that road on Thursday,” he said.

“Last week I met with the engineer and I am hoping now, from that meeting, there will be actions taken.”

Meanwhile, a local resident living along that stretch of road stressed that urgent action is needed before it’s too late.

“One poor man has lost his life,” the mother of three said.

“It is far too dangerous.”

Another described the condition of the road as “lethal”, insisting that something has to be done to fix it as soon as possible, while another person said it is “absolutely crazy” just how many cars lose control on that stretch of road.

“I am not aware of any other area in the parish that has so many accidents,” the concerned reader said.

At tomorrow’s Glenties MD meeting, Cllr Mac Giolla Easbuig will once again reiterate his calls for enhanced safety measures. While he acknowledges that speed is an issue on the road, he does not believe it is the sole cause of the multiple collisions.

“There seems to be another issue,” Cllr Mac Giolla Easbuig said.

“I am not an engineer, but I do believe something has to be done.”

Cllr Mac Giolla Easbuig will propose installing a grip surface on the road.

He also believes the road’s camber should be inspected, along with implementing speed reduction measures.
