Update sought on ATU sports development plans

A call has been made for a multi-agency meeting to discuss progress on a significant sporting development in Letterkenny.

Plans by Letterkenny Institute of Technology to develop a 66 acre sports complex at Knocknamona have been on the table for a number of years.

But since LYIT was dissolved to become part of Atlantic Technological University (ATU), concerns have been growing that the money ring-fenced could be reallocated to a different campus.

At a recent municipal district workshop Councillor Michael McBride asked that officials from various agencies, including ATU, Donegal County Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland be brought together to discuss where the plans are at.

Councillor McBride said, “Ideally you would have these facilities on campus but with the way Letterkenny is, that won’t be possible. But this land is in a good part of the town and it isn’t that far from the university as the crow flies.

“The bottom line is that if you want to compete for students you need the facilities. Sport is a big part of college life and I think it is important that we get an update on what would be a very substantial development.”

A spokesperson for Atlantic Technological University said Donegal County Council was being kept up to date on developments.
