The body of a teenager has been recovered from the water off Buncrana following an extensive search and rescue operation this evening.
He was one of three teenagers who had gotten into difficulty while swimming at Ned’s Point earlier today.
His body was recovered by members of the Greencastle Coast Guard team shortly after 9pm this evening and brought to Buncrana pier.
A major search operation got underway at around 4pm on Saturday after a member of the public reported that a group of swimmers had gotten into difficulty in the water at Ned’s Point.
The Irish Coast Guard search and rescue helicopter and several RNLI lifeboats along with local boats were involved in the search with the operation also involving Garda units and ambulance services.
One of the teenagers managed to swim ashore while another teenager was earlier taken from the sea and brought to Letterkenny University Hospital where his condition was said to be ‘very serious’.
Local volunteers, rescue personnel and members of the emergency services were all involved in the rescue operation which concluded tonight when the body of the missing teenager was recovered.
