THE change university status has created an employment boost for people in Donegal with a host of new posts to be filled at the former Letterkenny Institute of Technology.
Recruiting is now underway for various academic, technical, professional, management and support staff to be based at the Letterkenny campus of the Atlantic Technological University.
There are currently around 20 vacancies available with more expected to be announced in various departments throughout the year.
The change to university status, new courses and the introduction of online courses have led to the ongoing recruitment drive, while there is also a number of panels open for applicants in anticipation of increasing demand from students.
Mr Henry McGarvey, Vice President of Finance and Corporate Services, said the recruitment drive was a combination of new posts and replacement vacancies within ATU.
“Some of the vacancies are research posts as we are trying to grow the research area in line with the university while other jobs are directly related to the growth in student numbers.
“There are new courses such as electrical vehicle engineering which is a whole new area for us so we need lecturers for that.
“A number of integration projects are ongoing that will integrate our systems across the new university with Sligo and Galway especially in the finance and human resources department so this is creating new opportunities.

“We also have jobs for online delivery which are unique jobs that we would not have had on offer in the past,” said Mr McGarvey.
ATU is also hoping to engage in the financial technology sector or FinTech area particularly due to the large volume of FinTech companies operating in the Letterkenny and Derry area.
The new vacancies offer people in Donegal excellent opportunities to be employed within a university setting without having to leave the county.
Mr McGarvey said it was an exciting time for ATU with a lot of opportunities available for both students and staff.
“People based in Donegal can now avail of opportunities within a university setting in their home county which is great.
“There are a number of jobs advertised in Sligo or Galway that could be based out of any of the campuses so this creates new opportunities.
“The university is just getting off the ground so the successful applicants will be coming in at the
start and being part of an exciting journey from the get-go,” said Mr McGarvey.
