LETTERKENNY boxers Micheal Ward, Oran Shields, Brian Ward and Eva Browne were all crowned Ulster 9 Counties Champions on Saturday last in Tyholland, County Monaghan.

These Championships began on Sunday, October 28, and the Letterkenny Club had entered nine boxers with three of them in action on the first day.

First in for the Club was Patrick Gallagher who was paired with Fionbar Donoghue of Bishopkelly, County Tyrone. Young Gallagher performed very well in only his second contest only to lose out to his opponent.

Next up was Oran Shield, son of Club coach, Charlie Moore, who was matched with Callum McQuaid of Antrim. Oran stopped his opponent in the second round to claim victory.

Last in action on day one for the Club was Michael Ward who claimed victory over Dylan Boyd of Antrim.

Last Tuesday, October 30, the Club had four boxers in action. First up was Matthew Hanlon who came up against Michael Burns of St Johns Bosco, Belfast. After a good performance, Matthew lost out on points.

Next up was Sean Orr who came up against Eunan Rafferty, Carrickmore, Co Tyrone. After three furious rounds of boxing Orr came away with a good points win.

In his second contest of the week, Oran Shields was again in action in the Semi-Finals were he took on Daniel Flynn of Hillview, Belfast. One again Sheilds came out on top with a points decision.

Last up on the day was Brian Ward who claimed victory in the second round with a stoppage over Jorday O’Hagan, Irvinstown, Co Tyrone.

The finals took place on Saturday last where Michael Ward claimed victory over Patrick Kelly of Dunree, Co Donegal to claim the first title of the day for the Club.

Sean Orr was next in action and after a brave performance, he lost out to David Clarke of Springtown, Co Derry.
Next in the ring was Oran Shield who came up against Micheal Brennan of Old School, Co Monaghan. Oran pulled off one of the best final comebacks of the day as he was behind on points (15-7) at the end of the second round only to put in an outstanding third and final round to win the contest 28 – 23.

Crona Browne, daughter of Letterkenny coach, James Browne, had one the hardest fight of the day when she came up against Irish Champion Jane Carty of Ballyshannon, Co Donegal. Crona pushed young Carty back for most of the fight, only to lose out on points.

Brian Ward was next to enter the ring and he pulled off a fantastic victory over last year’s Champion to lift his first title on points.

Last boxing for the Club on the day was Anrai Cannon who was paired with Robert Gilmore of Canal, Belfast. Unfortunately it was not to be his day as Gilmore claimed victory.

Crona Browne’s sister Eva was crowned Champion by way of walkover.
