LETTERKENNY man Stephen McMonagle scooped the Ulster senior heavyweight title in impressive fashion on Friday night.
Boxing out of the Holy Trinity Club in Belfast, McMonagle defeated Thomas Copeland (Dockers) in a rousing heavyweight decider.
At the Dockworkers club in Belfast, McMonagle was up against a home favourite, but the Letterkenny native set the tone from early in the contest and blasted his way to the title, taking the unanimous verdict of the judges.
McMonagle is the younger brother of former five-time Irish super-heavyweight kingpin Cathal McMonagle.
The former Twin Towns BC boxer had beaten William Close (Abbey) in his semi-final on Tuesday night, but entered the final as the underdog with Copeland having been superb in his semi-final demolition of Charlie Boyle (Monkstown).
But it was McMonagle who came away with The Harkin Cup as he kept the pressure on Copeland throughout and the Dockers man had no answer to the power-punching Letterkenny man, who is now likely to enter the national seniors early in the New Year.
