ULSTER FINAL REACTION: Murphy – ‘I didn’t think it would happen again’

By Dáire Bonnar

DONEGAL forward Michael Murphy admitted on Saturday that picking up a sixth Ulster title is something he never thought would happen.
The Glenswilly man was named Man of the Match in the Ulster final as Donegal beat Armagh by 2-23 to 0-28 after extra-time in St Tiernach’s Park, Clones.

Murphy’s last championship game before this season was in June 2022 as Armagh disposed of Donegal with ease at the same venue.
After two years in retirement from intercounty football, he made the decision to come back this year and his influence on Saturday was huge.

“It’s brilliant, I didn’t think it would happen again for myself,” Murphy said after the game.
“I was here last year and I supported the boys and enjoyed it every bit as much as the ones I’ve played and I’m just delighted for the boys, the team, management and the people of Donegal to be up here again and to be able to win one.
“It looked great at times and didn’t look so good at other times but it’s a credit to the team that’s there, the hunger they showed to be able to stay in it.
“I came back to try and help the team, simply as.
“I remember having the conversation many moons ago and whether it was two or three minutes or no minutes, just helping out the team was the agenda and the whole thing about it. The hunger for me was there to try and help that out and it’s not about me, it’s about the team and Donegal and whatever contribution you can give, that’s what it’s about.”
