TWO young Donegal brothers secured Ulster boxing titles in impressive style in Strabane’s St Patrick’s’ Hall on Sunday last.
Members of the Oakleaf Boxing Club in Derry Seán Brady Devenney (11) and older brother Cathaír (12) from Corgary, Ballybofey, now progress to the All-Ireland finals which get underway in the National Stadium, Dublin, after Easter.
There they will be joined by their Oakleaf team-mate Adam McIvor (Newbuildings).
A pupil in St Mary’s NS, Stranorlar Seán (Boy 1, 11 years old, 33 kg) defeated Daniel Neill (Newry) 5-0 in last Sunday’s Ulster final while Cathaír (Boy 2, 12 years old, 50kg) was also a unanimous winner over Loughshore’s Edward McDonagh.
Eugene O’Kane, Senior, who runs the Oakleaf Club, said he was delighted with the two young Devenney brothers.
“They both won through the North West zones before winning 5-0 on Sunday. They were given two good hard fights and they had to up the ante to win through.
“A lot of people are taking about young Seán and how mature he is for his age. He’s been boxing since he was about six and has already developed a great technique. He’s a southpaw and takes in everything that he’s told by his coaches. He’s a credit and will take some beating in Dublin.
“Cathaír would have more power and would be depending a lot more on his strength but, overall, the two boys are a delight. We’re also happy to have their father Eunie (Eunan) and Eamon McAuley here as coaches,” he said.
“We’ve a lot of Donegal boxers in the club at the moment. There’s Brett McGinty who’s doing very well on the national stage and Callum Toland from St Johnston who is an up and coming young boxer. Lads don’t mind travelling a few mile these days for training and we’re only to happy to accommodate them,” he added.
The young brothers have McAuley, Eugene O’Kane Jnr and Christy Doherty in their corner. Their father Eunan is a former professional boxer and coach who was involved with the Twin Towns Club in his native Ballybofey for the best part of twenty years.
Their older brother Níal (15) is also a talented young boxer. All three boys have now won Boy 1 Ulster titles but Seán is more determined than ever to bring a first national title home.
Talented young sportsman, they also play soccer with Ballybofey United, rugby with Twin Towns and GAA with MacCumhaills.
