SENIOR Gardai in Buncrana are declining to comment on conflicting reports, published today (Wednesday) as to why a pipe bomb device may have been stored at a flat above a filling station in Burnfoot.

Two soldiers, one male, one female were arrested on Tuesday after, what was described as a viable device was discovered on Monday afternoon.

The Topaz filling station at Burnfoot was shut and army explosives personnel were brought to the scene and removed the device.

One report has claimed that the discovery of the pipe bomb relates to a “an ongoing row between two groups within the Defence Forces” while a different report claims the male and female soldiers arrested may have links to dissident paramilitary groups.

The soldiers, aged in their late twenties and thirties are being questioned in Buncrana Garda Station about the device and any possible terrorism links.
They were arrested under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.

Gardai and army forensic officers are looking at potential links between the device found on Monday and a similar device found at Letterkenny Garda Station in April of last year.

A senior garda told the Donegal News this morning that he did not wish to comment at this stage on what is an active investigation.
