TWO Donegal schools are at risk of closure as one-teacher schools are to beurged to merge with bigger national schools.
According to documents obtained by the Sunday Business Post under the Freedom of Information Act, there are 26 one-teacher schools, out of a total of 44 in the country, which are located within eight kilometres of at least one other school.
Two of these are in Donegal – Scoil Naisiunta Dumhach Beag (Doaghbeg National School) on the Fanad peninsula, and Arainn Mhor 2 National School, Arranmore Island.
Fianna Fáil education spokesperson, Donegal North East Deputy Charlie McConalogue said the government is trying to force one-teacher schools into a corner leaving them with little or no option but no merge with other schools in their locality.
