The investment has been prompted by a significant increase in people enjoying outdoor water-based activities such as kayaking, surfing, paddle-boarding and open water swimming is expected to continue to grow year on year, and not just during the summer months. 

This means all-weather changing facilities, secure storage and bathrooms at beaches and inland water spots will be in huge demand.

Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine and Donegal TD, Charlie McConalogue welcomed the announcement.

Mr McConalogue said, “This is great news for Donegal and for the projects in Bundoran and Downings. The investment will help create local employment and will encourage further tourism in these towns.”

Dr Bláithín Gallagher – Constituency Spokesperson and National Coordinator of the Green Party/An Comhaontas Glas said, “This is absolutely fantastic news for Donegal, Sligo and Leitrim. Another Green Party driven investment to enhance our local areas, which will benefit local people and tourists alike. These enhanced facilities at Tullan Strand, Bundoran will also be greatly valued by local businesses as this provision will increase footfall to these beautiful areas.”

“The restrictions applied during the Covid 19 Pandemic have taught us all the value of outdoor activities. There has been a great increase in water based activities with sea swimming on a year round basis becoming an extremely popular activity,” said Dr Gallagher.
