THIS year’s Poor Farmers Auction in Ardara has raised over €50,000.
The annual event returned to its traditional home of McTeague’s Bar on Tuesday night after two years in Brockagh mart due to Covid restrictions.
And as usual bidders weren’t shy about digging deep with one buyer putting €500 on the table for two hens.
A total of €52,450 was raised on the night with all proceeds going to four charities – Hugh’s House in Dublin, Ability Rocks, the Charlie Bennett Foundation and the Irish Heart Foundation.
Among the auctioneers was Daniel Moy.
He said, “It was a great night’s craic with so many different items sold. We had sheep, we had a scooter, we had sheepdog pups, we had signed Ireland rugby jerseys, you name it, we probably had it.
“One of the signed jerseys fetched €1,500 with some of the sheep making in excess of €600. We had two hens that sold for €500.
“It was a great night and to raise so much, it’s a big achievement in a small community.”
Shaun Swine in a bit of a twist during Tuesday night’s Poor Farmers Auction in McTeague’s Bar, Ardara. The fun event raised €52,450 for four charities.
This year was the seventeenth Poor Farmers Auction and altogether the novel event has raised just shy of €464,000.
Mr Moy added, “It was good to be back in McTeague’s which is the home of the Poor Farmers. The whole thing is organised in a short space of time, we just have a couple of meetings and the whole thing is pulled together and everything gathered up from there.
“Like I say, it’s a big achievement for such a small area and a massive thank you has to go out to everyone involved in making it happen.”
