TWIN Towns BC’s Donna Barr goes in search of a National Intermediate title in Dublin on Saturday night.

The Strabane woman meets Kirsty McCarthy (Golden Cobra) for the 50kgs title. A previous winnerr of the national novice intermediate crown and an under-21 title, Barr scooped a silver medal at the recent Celtic Cup in Waterford.

A handful of Donegal boxers are in men’s semi-final action earlier on Saturday.

Barr’s Twin Towns colleague, middleweight Paul Kelly – who won a gold at that Celtic Cup – will meet Shane Egan of Bracken following his quarter-final win over Vladimir Beluski (Watergrasshill).

Also in the morning session Illies Golden Gloves’ Thomas Mongan meets Barry Walsh of St Colman’s at 57kgs, while Donegal men Lee Boyd and Noel McBride lash the leather at 67kgs.

Defence forces champion Boyd from the Convoy club is in hot form of late and he meets Annagry native McBride, now boxing out of the Corrib club in Galway.

McBride is the man who fought Jason Quigley in the Golden Boy’s first-ever fight when he was just seven years old (Quigley won that bout).

In the afternoon session, Letterkenny duo Stephen Doherty (81kgs) and Michael McConigley (91+kgs) will hope to reach the finals. Doherty defeated Michael Cummings last week – the same man he’d beaten to win the Ulster title in October – and now faces Kinsale’s Conal Dillon.

The super-heavyweight division sees McConigley meet Bernie Stokes from the Bluestack club in Ballybofey.
