DONEGAL Local Development Company Ltd (DLDC) hosted its annual ‘Progression Day’ today, September 16, in the Finn Valley Athletic Centre, Stranorlar to acknowledge the valuable contribution made by Participants employed under the Tús Programme and to provide guidance and assistance on progressing to new opportunities after the one year placement.
DLDC have delivered the Tús employment initiative since 2011 and currently hosts 220 participants, working in 130 community and voluntary groups throughout DLDC’s central catchment area.
Participants are placed with community groups such as Childcare, Care of the Elderly, Disabilities, Community Resource Centres, Village Enhancement Projects and Sporting Facilities including GAA, Boxing Clubs, Soccer and other sporting activities.
The Progression Day was opened by Mr Jim Slevin, Chairperson of DLDC, in his address he expressed his gratitude to the Tús Programme participants whose valuable contribution and dedication has allowed the various voluntary organisations to continue and extend their services to meet the needs of the local communities.
He acknowledged the input and commitment of the Sponsor Groups who continue to provide the facilities and services available in the community.
Stephen Shevlin, DLDC’s Tús Co-ordinating Supervisor, said: “Today is about progression and about looking at opportunities after Tús. We are delighted to have the various different agencies and organisations in attendance here today.”

Key Speakers from local organisations included Dearbhla Kelly from Donegal ETB, Gerry Bruton and Lee Downey from Department of Social Protection, Paddy Hannigan from Citizens Information, Edel Kelly from Irish National Organisation of the Unemployed, Louise Brogan, Eleanor Rooney and John Curran from Donegal Local Development Company.
All speakers gave an overview of the supports and guidance that are available to Tús Participants for their next step. Information stands on the day provided Tús Participants information booklets and one-to-one advice.
Tús Participant Peter Mongan, placed with Red Hughs in Killygordon, said: “I have been a participant now for over six months and I am really enjoying it, learning new skills, getting out and active in the community. I am hoping to return to training when my placement ends.”
Stephen Shevlin closed the event by acknowledging the commitment and contribution of Tús Participants to DLDC and to their communities.
Stephen said: “The work undertaken has made a huge impact on your own communities and the wider region and I on behalf of DLDC and the Dept of Social Protection would like thank you and wish you all the very best in your future endeavours.”
