A HOARD of gold discovered in an east Donegal field last year is to go on display at Donegal County Museum tomorrow.

The Tullydonnell Lower Gold Hoard is among the heaviest ever discovered in Ireland and is said to be in “excellent near-perfect condition”. 

It has been confirmed to the Donegal News that the gold will be on loan to Donegal County Museum where it will be on display for the next two weeks.

A spokesperson stated: “Donegal County Museum in association with the National Museum of Ireland is delighted to announce that the Tullydonnell Lower Gold Hoard will be on display in Donegal County Museum from 10am on Tuesday 19 November until Saturday 30 November.” 

This exceptional gold hoard, dating from the Bronze Age (1200 to 800BC) was discovered by chance in June 2018, when farmers took the opportunity of a dry summer to improve drainage at the base of a field at Tullydonnell Lower in East Donegal.  

The display of the Gold Rings has been part-funded by the Creative Ireland programme and the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht.  

Admission is free and all are welcome.  The Museum will be facilitating school tours but 

booking is essential.   Booking is also essential for groups.
