RTE presenter, Ryan Tubridy, is set to bring his popular Radio One programme to Buncrana in the wake of a drowning tragedy which claimed the lives of five family members.
The broadcaster has vowed to do this after he was struck when a local man won the Late Late Show – which he also hosts – prize last week.
Announcing the decision on his show earlier today, Tubridy had asked listeners to make suggestions as to where his annual tour of Ireland should go and was bombarded with suggestions from listeners.
However, he said his decision had already been made and announced he would be bringing his popular show to the Inishowen seaside town.
He said: “Someone suggested that we should go to Buncrana after tall that has happened there recently and I can tell you we are definitely going to Buncrana.”
He said the suggestions were made after a Buncrana man known as ‘John Boy’ was the winner of the Late Late Show cash prize of 250,000 on last Friday night’s show.
And the announcement came after RTE’s Northern Editor, Tommie Gorman, was interviewed by Ryan on the Late Late Show about the tragic events in Buncrana.
Tubridy brought his show to Dunfanaghy last June as part of his series, ‘Tubridy’s Wild Atlantic Venture’.
Sean McGrotty (46) from Derry, died alongside his two young sons, Mark (12) and eight-year-old Evan, their grandmother, Ruth Daniels (57) and her daughter, Jodie-Lee (14) when their Audi Q7 car got into difficulty on the algae-covered surface of the slipway at Buncrana pier on Sunday, March 20.
Mr McGrotty’s four-month-old baby daughter, Rioghnach-Ann was saved from the sinking car when her father passed her through a window to Kerrykeel man, Davitt Walsh, who has been hailed a hero. Calls have since been made to have his courageous actions officially rewarded.
