TSB branch to close

BY CRONAN SCANLON
THE Permanent TSB branch in Donegal Town is to close within the next four years as part of a major restructuring of the bank which was announced on Tuesday. In all, 16 Permanent TSB branches will close around the country.

The Unite trade union said between 195 and 250 job losses are expected nationwide but it will be working to limit that number. The union said staff were notified on Tuesday of the impending closures.

It is believed the Donegal Town branch will be paired with both the Letterkenny or Sligo branches which will provide service to existing customers. A spokesman for Unite said yesterday (Thursday) that it is working with their members in the affected branches.

“We are aware of the distress which this announcement has caused and our duty to our members is to make sure that the highest possible number of permanent sustainable jobs is retained,” said Unite National Co-ordinator, Walter Cullen.

“The company has undertaken that redundancies will be on a voluntary basis and the branch closures advised to staff this evening will hopefully facilitate as little displacement as possible for those who wish to stay on at the bank.”
