Hundreds of heartfelt tributes have been paid to the late Stephen Ann O’Donnell following his passing over the weekend.
The Rann na Feirste native founded the family-run petrol station and shop in Crolly nearly 40 years ago.
Since then, O’Donnell’s Fuels has expanded beyond West Donegal, now with locations in both Ellistrin and Kilmacrennan.
Áislann Rann na Feirste, where Stephen was a founding member and former director, expressed their heartbreak at the loss of the beloved businessman.
The organisation spoke warmly of his unwavering support for the local community, describing him as a backbone of the community centre.
Stephen and the committee worked tirelessly in the early days, fundraising, seeking grants and overseeing the project long before ground was ever broken.
Stephen also played a significant role in the local Irish language college, Coláiste Bhríde. He and his wife, Bríd, hosted Irish language students in their home for many years.
Many of the tributes remembered Stephen for his kindness and helpfulness.
Fr. John Joe Duffy also paid tribute, praising Stephen’s generosity, particularly in the wake of the Creeslough tragedy.
“I remember one evening leaving it too late to put fuel in my car and I called Stephen very late in the evening and he came over filled the car and wouldn’t even take the money for it.
“That generosity carried on through his family was so evident when tragedy struck in Creeslough. Again that wonderful quiet and private generosity was there in abundance.
“Stephen was a visionary in business and always had a great welcome for people.”
