Tributes paid to former Donegal Addiction Services Manager Moira Mills

LETTERKENNY woman Moira Mills has been remembered for the significant impact she had on many lives, after her sad passing earlier this week.

Ms Mills (née Foley), of Heather View, Calhame passed away peacefully at Letterkenny University Hospital on Monday, January 19.

Best known for serving as manager of the HSE West Addiction Services in Donegal, Ms Mills also played a pivotal role in introducing the Diploma in Addiction Studies and the Research Master’s Programme, Therapeutic Interventions in Alcohol and Other Drugs, to ATU Donegal.

She lectured on both programmes, sharing her extensive knowledge of addiction and mental health with her students.

In a heartfelt tribute, a past pupil of Ms Mills’ said: “Moira was a powerful woman, a straight shooter who made a huge difference in the lives of many, many people.”

Meanwhile, Alcohol Forum Ireland paid tribute to their founding member, advisor, supporter, and cherished friend.

“It is with deep sadness we heard of the passing of Moira Mills, a valued founder member, advisor, supporter and dear friend,” a spokesperson said.

“Throughout her long and loyal involvement with our charity, Moira brought warmth, dedication, compassion and kindness to all of her interactions with staff, board members and everyone with whom she came into contact.

“She was hugely experienced and highly competent, leaving a lasting mark on all of our team, past and present.”

Ms Mills was remembered for her ability to make people feel seen, heard and appreciated.

“Her passion for the wellbeing of children and families impacted by alcohol harm inspired AFI to develop beyond our roots in Donegal,” a spokesperson continued.

“She was instrumental in the development of our family programmes and our Alcohol Related Brain Injury work and in more recent times, prior to her retirement from AFI, in the establishment of our under 18s alcohol and other drug support services in Cavan and Monaghan.

“Our deepest sympathies are with all of her family and friends.”

Ms Mills’ remains will be reposing at her home today until 10pm with Rosary at 9pm.

A shuttle bus is operating from Pinehill Business Park (Highland Radio entrance), Mountain Top, Letterkenny, until 10 pm tonight.

Requiem Mass will take place tomorrow in St Eunan’s Cathedral, Letterkenny at 1pm.

Following Mass, burial will take place in Conwal Cemetery.

Ms Mills is predeceased by her father, Tim.

She is deeply missed by her loving husband Kevin, daughters Fiona (Ciaran) and Aisling (Killian) and her mother Rose, her brothers Michael (Mary), Gerard (Claire), Brendan (Annette) and Eilís (Leonard), brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and a wide circle of family, friends and neighbours.

She leaves behind her loving grandchildren April, Sam, Conor, Maya and Barra who will hold her memory forever.
