By Diarmaid Doherty

Born in Ramelton, Victor and his family moved to Letterkenny when he was a young boy and he often spoke with great pride of his memories of growing up in the town where he would make such a major impact in later life.

He was a businessman, politician and active community member who got involved in so many local groups and organisations over his long life.

Among his great loves was football. He was a lifelong Liverpool supporter and his home at Kiltoy was named ‘Anfield Grove’. A staunch Finn Harps supporter for many years, Victor was also a past President of Letterkenny Rovers where he had been a valued member of the club and committee for many years.

Along with his dear friend Dessie Kelly, Victor loved nothing more than to be out and about, attending matches at all levels, and spending his spare time selling lotto tickets or helping out.

Letterkenny Rovers have cancelled all club activities this weekend as a mark of respect.

In a post on social media, a club spokesperson said: “While Victor fulfilled many roles across different organisations, he was a man who gave great service to our club.

“He made a hugely significant contribution over a number of years through his fundraising efforts, selling club lotto tickets and establishing our club bingo in the Station House Hotel.

“His hard work and dedication played a pivotal role in the development of our facilities at Leckview Park.

“Victor always took great pride in the club’s achievements and was honoured to hold the position of Club President since 2023. He leaves us with many fond memories and will be sadly missed by all who knew him.”

Many will also remember Victor for his contribution to local politics. He was a Fianna Fáil councillor and a proud member of the party, working on countless local and general election campaigns and proudly elected to Letterkenny Urban District Council on seven consecutive occasions. He was also Mayor three times.

His introduction to the party came about from his close friendship with Senator Bernard McGlinchey who ran the once hugely popular Golden Grill. Many will remember Victor’s presence on the door at the Grill where he took payment from patrons on disco nights.

Victor was a constant presence on Main Street for many years with Victor’s Gift Shop a popular businesses adjacent to the Post Office.

Even in his retirement, he loved the interaction with friends and members of the community and always enjoyed a chat about politics, sport or the issues of the day.

Victor will be deeply regretted by his wife Helen (née Price), daughter, Mairead, (Jonny), sons, David (Justine), Kevin (Clara) and Barry, grandchildren, Jordan, Tori, Daragh, Luke, Renee, Rudi, Noah, Theo, Kaia Rey, Kasey Mae, great-grandson Leo, sister Eileen (Hull), in-laws, relatives, neighbours and friends.

He was predeceased by his parents George and Francis, baby brother, Terence and Carl, sisters, Isabel and Georgina.

His remains will repose at his home from 11am on Saturday to 12 noon on Sunday.

Funeral from there at 12.45pm going to St Eunan’s Cathedral for Funeral Mass at 1.30pm. Interment afterwards in the family plot at New Leck Cemetery.

Family flowers only please. Donations if wished to the Donegal Hospice c/o Paschal Blake Funeral Director, Stoney Arch, New Line Road, Letterkenny.
