Terry Ponsonby, a well-known businessman from Letterkenny, is being fondly remembered as “one in a million” following his unexpected passing in Spain earlier this week.
Best known for owning the popular local take-away ‘The Friars Rest’, Mr Ponsonby was a well-known and much-loved figure in the Cathedral Town and beyond.
Sharing the heart-breaking news on social media on Tuesday, the team at The Friars Rest described their boss as much more than just the man behind the counter; he was the heart and soul of the business.
“It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Terence Ponsonby, beloved owner of The Friars Rest,” a spokesperson said.
“A familiar face to so many, Terry was more than just the man behind the counter.
“He was the heart of the Friars, always ready with a smile, a story and time for everyone.”
Meanwhile, the local community has been coming to terms with the sad news of the popular businessman’s passing.
Paying tribute to the Oldtown native, one neighbour recalled Terry as not only a great employer to many, but also a loyal and cherished friend.
Another described him as “an absolute gentleman” who was taken far too soon.
He was also fondly remembered for his kindness and generosity towards everyone.
With funeral arrangements for the Letterkenny man still to be confirmed, it is believed that it could take up to ten days for his body to be repatriated.
“We know how many lives he touched,” a spokesperson continued.
“We’ll share funeral arrangements and more details as soon as we have them.
“Thank you for your support and kind thoughts during this difficult time.”
Mr Ponsonby is survived by his wife Perpetua (Pep), daughter, Davina, and son, Mark, other relatives, colleagues and many friends.
