TREMORS from the earthquake which killed thousands of people in Turkey and Syria were recorded on two seismometers in Donegal.
The earthquake on the Turkey and Syria border recorded 7.8 in magnitude at 01.17 followed by aftershocks at 7.5 magnitudes at 10.24am hours on Monday morning.
The number of confirmed deaths in both Turkey and Syria stood at over 5,000 with the expectation that numbers will continue to rise, according to Reuters.
The death toll in the rebel-held north-west of Syria has been raised to 900.
The devastating tremors were recorded on Irish National Seismic Network station in Inch Island and a seismometer in St Columba’s College, Stranorlar.
Brendan O Donoghue of St.Columbas, College Stranorlar monitors both stations and said they recorded clear signals from the tremors.
“It is quite clear where the events occur. It is a nice calm day and then all of a sudden there are massive waves recorded there and here.
“So it is unsurprising that the degree of damage that we are seeing is severe.
“It seems to have been felt over a very large area and there have been reports of ten different cities involved,” said Mr O’Donoghue.
