A LOCAL councillor is to ask for the support of Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District in writing to the Transport Minister to urge him to come to the town to see firsthand the serious traffic congestion.
Cllr Gerry McMonagle is expected to table at motion at tomorrow’s meeting asking that the Letterkenny-Milford MD writes to the Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien TD to invite him to come to visit Letterkenny to witness for himself the serious difficulties existing with traffic.
The motion will also call on the Roads Department to make a presentation to him on the road infrastructure upgrades that are necessary for Letterkenny to manage the increasing amount of traffic in the town, and to ensure its continued growth and development as an emerging city in the North West.
The move comes amid heightened tensions around the volume of traffic bottlenecks in and around Letterkenny.
In August, a public meeting was held, seeking solutions to the ongoing issue. The meeting was organised by Aontú’s Mary T Sweeney to address “traffic chaos” in the town, which, she had said, was “only getting worse”.
A large number of people attended the meeting, which came just as school returned after the summer break.
“Residents and commuters need Donegal County Council and Councillors to listen and make an active effort to address traffic congestion around our town,” Ms T Sweeny had said.
