ISSUES around planning along the N56 is one matter a Donegal County County councillor is set to raise with Minister Eamon Ryan tomorrow when he comes to the county.
The Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications and Minister for Transport is to attend a planning workshop with councillors in Lifford. A number of items are on the agenda, including planning (Draft County Development Plan).
Cathaoirleach of the Glenties Municipal District, Councillor Michael McClafferty has said he will use the opportunity to offer Minister Ryan a tour of west Donegal in a bid to highlight pressing concerns of little employment and mass immigration.
“I will offer him a tour of west Donegal, and explain why Donegal is unique. Life is tough in Donegal, it’s hard. There’s little employment for most, hence the huge immigration. Some are forced away with no option or choice to far corners of the world, which is very sad,” he told the Donegal News.
The independent councillor said that he hopes to discuss the current prohibiting of planning along the N56 with Minister Ryan, and to point out why allowing people along the route is a must.
“This is our own land. Our ancestors worked this land before us, dug out stones with their bare hands to make fields to survive. We need that access on to the N56, no exceptions. It’s time Dublin stopped telling us what to do in Donegal.”
Cllr McClafferty said he will also discuss turf burning with Minister Ryan, and why it is a vital part of life in Donegal.
“Our current government simply doesn’t understand rural life, particularly in Donegal, he said.
