Trainee mechanic avoids being disqualified

A TRAINEE mechanic detected spinning his rear wheel tyres during the Donegal rally has avoided being disqualified.

Josh Grimes (21), of Mount Rivers, Rylane, Cork, was charged with driving with speed at Lisnaree, Convoy, on June 19, 2023. Sergeant Maurice Doyle told Letterkenny District Court that on the day in question the defendant was observed driving the vehicle, taking off with speed causing the rear tyres to spin.

The defendant immediately stopped when garda members activated blue lights. He was “most compliant”, the court heard.

Solicitor Frank Dorrian said: “The time and date of this offence is most telling, it was the rally. He surrendered completely. He is doing a FAS course. He does not drink. He is 21 years of age and is training to be a mechanic.”

Judge Éiteáin Cunningham convicted and fined Grimes €250.

“I will not disqualify on this occasion,” she told Grimes.
