MOVIE lovers have been given their first glimpse of the new film from Donegal director Gerard Lough.
Billed as a complex thriller, ‘Spears’ comes five years after the release of Lough’s first feature film, the well received science fiction horror ‘Night People’.
The Donegal man’s latest offering has a much larger scope and was shot across four different countries. Local viewers may well recognise many of the locations though as scenes for Spears were filmed at Slieve League, Maghera waterfall and Meentycat wind farm.
Leading the international cast is Donegal actor Aidan O’Sullivan with stars including Bobby Calloway, Nigel Brennan, Michael Parle, Yalda Shahidi, Rebecca Rose Flynn and Thomas Sharkey all involved. Other local talent includes Michael Leddy and Kieran Kelly.
Gerard Lough describes Spears as having a “moody atmosphere and pervading sense of paranoia”.
“The film will be very much be rooted in the neo-noir style and explore topical themes both political and technological,” said the film maker following the unveiling of the official trailer.
“The film begins when Private Investigator Kian (Brennan) is sent to Italy to find a woman (Shahidi) who mysteriously disappeared there.
“The film’s title is taken from the Emily Bronte quote: ‘Treachery and violence are spears pointed by both ends; they would those who resort to them worse than their enemies’.”
As well as the exotic locations Spears highlights some of the best new Irish and British electronica with music from artists such as Shaefri, Sleep Thieves, Le Groupe Fantastique and Exit: Pursued by a Bear.
The song ‘Is This Ready?’ by Sleep Thieves can be heard on the trailer.
Spears will be released in 2021 but you can watch the trailer for it right now here: https://youtu.be/QuDo22sNHSQ
