Traffic lights for Polestar ‘cannot come soon enough’

NEW traffic lights for the Polestar Roundabout “cannot come soon enough”, according to Cllr Donal ‘Mandy’ Kelly who this week urged the local authority to have lights operational as soon as the Four Lane road is completed.

All roads leading to the roundabout come to a standstill in the morning and evening with motorists reporting delays of over 40 minutes during peak times.

The issue was raised at this week’s Letterkenny/Milford Municipal District meeting when Cllr Kelly described the situation as “shocking”.

“The Four Lane seems to be progressing well and hitting targets but we must have the lights ready to go,” Cllr Kelly said.

Cllr Ciaran Brogan seconded the motion adding it was his understanding that funding for the lights had been allocated.

“Delivering projects can be more difficult than getting funding,” he added.

Roads Engineer David McIlwaine told the meeting the funding application for the lights was with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).

“We are hoping for an announcement in the next few days,” he added.

In the written answer the council stated: “A funding application has been made to the Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) for the signalization of the Polestar roundabout.

“TII funding allocations have not yet been announced. When details of the allocations are announced and if funding is provided for this scheme, the members will be updated with the proposed programme and the method of completing the project”.
