A 23-years-old St Johnston man remained in a critical condition yesterday (Thursday) following a serious road traffic accident on the outskirts of the town in the early hours.

The man has been named locally as Darry McDaid, a native of Cavanacaw, who sustained critical injuries as a result of the accident which happened at around 12.50am at Drumnahoagh on the busy Letterkenny to Derry Road.

His parents and family kept a bedside vigil yesterday in the intensive care unit of the hospital.

The BMW car he was driving lost control and veered over four lanes of traffic before colliding with a stone all near Murphy’s Plant Hire.

Speaking to the Donegal News yeserday, Garda Inspector Goretti Sheridan, said the man who was the sole occupant, was critically injured and taken to the local hospital where he remains in intensive care.

The road was closed by gardai immediately after the accident for technical and forensic examination. This resulted in major traffic delays yesterday morning as thousands of commuters were stuck in gridlock on major routes into the town.

Gardai in Letterkenny are appealing for witnesses or anyone who may have been on the Letterkenny to Derry road between 12.30am and 1am to contact them on 074 9167100, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
