Traffic chaos in Letterkenny

THERE were inordinate traffic delays coming into Letterkenny from the O’Donnell Park roundabout on the R250, yesterday evening with massive tailbacks and up to 45 minute waiting times.

There was a traffic light system in operation around 7.30 pm at the roundabout at the bottom of Main Street as Irish Water were working very close to the roundabout and had a large excavator operating there. That traffic light system allowed traffic to flow, albeit slowly.

However, by 8 pm traffic attempting to come into the town via Sallaghgrane was a nightmare.
One motorist said it appeared that traffic coming out of the town seemed to flow at twice the pace than the slow crawl inwards for motorists.

“From the roundabout at O’Donnell Park to the bottom of Convent Road took 45 minutes. Once I reached the junction with Convent Road there was a garda on duty directing traffic but no visible cause on the terrible delays.
“By nature of how narrow that section of road into town is, if emergency services needed to use it, it would have been near impossible. You accept there might be delays as new pipes are laid but surely it’s not that difficult to keep traffic flowing evenly.
“It just puts you off coming near Letterkenny at all,” the motorist said.
