The value of sterling, special offers-sales, free car parking, value for money and a huge variety of shops are being cited as the drivers of the Christmas trade this year.

Shop owners are hoping the harsh weather will not put shoppers off from hunting for the last minute bargains before they close on Christmas Eve.

Stores in Letterkenny were also reporting increased foot-fall and sales in the run up to Christmas.

Speaking to the Donegal News yesterday, Mr Gerard McCormick of Magees in Letterkenny, said traders had a busy weekend and were hoping for a last push in sales over the next 48 hours.

“Business has certainly picked up over the weekend,” he said.

“We’re hoping for a last minute rush. A lot of people didn’t get finished up work till Saturday, so they still have two days to get around. It was slow to start, but things are picking well now again,”

“There is a huge variety of shops in Letterkenny and with sterling strong it is all contributing to bringing more people out. The Shop LK

campaign is also playing a huge part for businesses’- it is a great idea,” Mr McCormick added.
