They have produced a DVD called “It’s not fair, you’re claiming our air!” which highlights the effects of second-hand smoke on children.
The project is part of the Irish Cancer Society’s X-HALE Youth Awards Scheme through which the TTC won a grant of €1,500 to raise awareness of the effects of passive smoking on children in their community.
Members of the local community, local school children and youth groups and Donegal County Council member Councillor Patrick McGowan were the first to see this exciting project; presented as two short films based on a survey of 203 school children aged 10-13 years in Ballybofey.
Results from the survey showed that 83 per cent of these children have been subjected to other people’s smoke.
Over half of these children reported that they were not listened to when they asked the smoker not to smoke in front of them. 40 per cent of the children surveyed were exposed to smoking in the family car.
