Top trad musicians gather for Ceol na Coille

SOME of Ireland’s top trad musicians are in Donegal to celebrate Ceol na Coille’s tenth anniversary summer school and trad camp.

Ceol na Coille Summer School, which runs from July 11 to 15, has become one of the ‘must-visit’ weeks of traditional music in the calendar year.

Former Altan member Dermot Byrne joins tutors including Yvonne Casey, Deirdre Scanlan and Steve Cooney as well as a host of local tutors for flute, whistle, piano and button accordion and piano.

“Over the last two years of restrictions we have marked the week with online tutorials and pre-recorded performances so we are delighted to get back to face to face classes, recitals and sessions,” said Ceol na Coille’s Paul Harrigan.

Dermot Byrne will be among the trad musicians participating in this year’s Ceol na Coille summer school.

“Another highlight this year is our anniversary concert in association with the Regional Cultural Centre featuring Dermot Byrne, Yvonne Casey and Steve Cooney with support from Deirdre Scanlan from Tipperary.”

Workshops take place in Coláiste Ailigh where younger, aspiring musicians can experience trad camp for children aged five years and up, no experience necessary. From there workshops go right up to masterclasses for those wishing to hone their techniques.

Building on the success of last year’s diverse series of concerts and album launches, the summer school welcomes the addition of the extensive ‘session trail’ offering an opportunity to play with the finest visiting and local tutors.

In addition there are free to the public afternoon recitals Monday to Thursday 3-4pm.

An Braon Beag Gaeilge, a conversation circle for those with a Cúpla Focal who are eager to learn more Irish, will take place each day in association with Líonra Leitir Ceanainn.
