DONEGAL man Liam Cannon has been awarded the prestigious Carl Berkeley Memorial for his outstanding contributions to the counselling and psychotherapy field.
Mr Cannon was also awarded the Northern Ireland Regional Award for Outstanding Contributions to the field.
The Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (IACP) presented the award to Mr Cannon at their 7th Annual Conference in the Galway Bay Hotel over the weekend.
The national Carl Berkeley Memorial Award honours a member of the IACP who has made an outstanding contribution to the development of the counselling profession by creating or influencing counselling projects or counselling development work at local and national level.
The IACP Regional Award recognises an IACP member who makes a notable contribution to the profession of counselling and psychotherapy in their local community and region.
IACP Chief Executive Officer Lisa Molloy congratulated Liam Cannon on his “remarkable achievements”.
“Mr Cannon’s many contributions to expanding the availability of counselling and psychotherapy services to county Donegal’s young people has facilitated nearly 7,000 counselling sessions delivered to children and adolescents since 2015.
“Recognising the importance of community counselling supports, Mr Cannon has created a model of community counselling, developed robust governance, and has led on the establishment of services which cover most of Donegal,” she said.
Mr Cannon has been an IACP Accredited Member since 2007 and Accredited Supervisor since 2013.
Following the award ceremony, he thanked the Carl Berkeley Award committee, the Board of Directors and the Northern Ireland Regional Committee.
He went on to highlight the importance of community, especially in the light of the recent tragedy in Creeslough.
“The heart of my work lies in the community, in recent days we have all witnessed the power of community following a very tragic event at a service station in Creeslough just 15 minutes from my home,” he said.
In May, Mr Cannon launched Tír Chonill Counselling & Psychotherapy Services.
He also acknowledged the efforts of his team and the people who work tirelessly behind the scenes to improve the lives of so many.
