Finbarr Doherty's album Skyscrapers was name Hot Press Pick Of The Fortnight.
DONEGAL songwriter Finbarr Doherty’s latest album Skyscrapers has been given the thumbs up by Ireland’s biggest music publication, Hot Press Magazine.
Doherty’s album, which was release as part of the Earagail Arts Festival last July, was recently chosen as the Hot Press Pick Of The Fortnight in its February 9 edition.
Reviewer Jackie Hayden said “The title track is a beguiling song about selling skyscrapers underpinned by a stomping riff that takes it beyond the norm for Irish acoustic based albums….Doherty has a winning way with a lyric that gives his material an appealing depth.”
Doherty recorded the album as a follow up to his 2007 album ‘Across the Water’ inspired by the book The Last of the Name.
Musicians who appeared on the former return to this new much more indie rock feel album. The impressive backline on Skyscrapers includes Campbell Owens, Liam Bradley, Billy Robinson, Seamus Devenny, Karen and Lorna McLaughlin, Kate O’Callaghan, Ry Cavanaugh and Jennifer Kimball. The album was mixed and mastered by Billy Robinson and Terry McGinty.
Songs on Skyscrapers cover a broad brush of topics from lost love, football of sorts, death and commerce. The Irish Daily Star also highly rated Skyscrapers stating “…It fuses elements of folk and indie rock from both sides of the Atlantic, on introspective songs that embrace brevity as a rule of thumb except on the bluesy Don’t break up. One song even bizarrely namechecks English soccer team West Bromwich Albion in its title.”
You can catch the Finbarr Doherty band at the Wine Bar, Ramelton on Saturday, March 10th.
Download the album or order a hard copy from Finbarr’s website or pick it up in Cool Discs, Derry and local outlets in Donegal.
