At approximately 1am this morning two cars were involved in a collision in an area known as Corravaddy approximately four miles from Letterkenny.

The scene is currently closed to traffic and diversions are in place. Garda forensic collision investigators have been requested to examine the scene and the local coroner has been notified.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses. Anyone with information is asked to contact Letterkenny Garda Station 074-9167100 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.

It is the second multi-fatality road traffic accident in the county inside twenty four hours.

Two men in their late teens and early twenties, named locally as Barney McGinley and Dermot Boyle, died in the head on collision when their grey Mitsubishi Charisma car – which was travelling on the wrong side of the road – struck a yellow Renault Master van on the inbound lane of the dual carriageway at Trimragh shortly before 5am on Wednesday morning.

The Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission has confirmed that it is carrying out an investigation following reports of Garda interaction in the case of one of the vehicles involved in yesterday morning’s fatal collision on the dual carriageway outside Letterkenny.

A statement from the Garda Ombudsman has said that they are investigating reports of Garda involvement in the incident.
