SPIRITS are high in the south west as two communities prepare for world record attempts this weekend.
In Glenties the leprechauns will take to the streets tomorrow (Saturday), while St Patrick costumes will fill the streets of neighbouring parish of Ardara on Sunday.
Ardara is hoping for up to 400 St Patricks, but Glenties are keeping their numbers top secret as they are in competition with Bandon in County Cork this weekend for the record of having most people dressed as leprechauns in the one place.
Both organising groups were invited to appear on a pre-recorded Craig Doyle RTÉ St Patrick’s Special which was aired by the national broadcaster last night (Thursday).
Ardara Traders spokesperson, Mr Gerard Slowey said both events were a huge boost for the south west of the county and they were working hard together to promote them.
“The two towns have been working very well to promote the events and I know a lot of people going to Glenties as leprechauns and returning to Ardara as saints,” he laughed. “These are two fantastic events and we want to wish everyone in Glenties all the best for Saturday.”
